A Word from The Head Teacher

I am delighted to introduce West Midlands Education and Skills to you. Our remarkable school supports a wide range of pupils with needs within the Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) bracket. We offer a One to One Programme for students that work at Designated Learning Venues or in the home and small group classes on our friendly school site.

We dedicate ourselves to ensuring that when our children and young people join us, we set them on the path towards their own individual success. All of our students have an EHC plan that mainstream school has been unable to accommodate. Every student is unique and often children with SEND can get lost in the size and speed of mainstream schools. We aim to understand each child’s uniqueness and support them in a unique way, taking care to understand their level and to build from there.

Working with our dedicated tutors on a One to One or small group basis means that they can work on exactly what it is that they need to make progress in, being away from the distraction or comparison to their peers.

Supporting students with their wellbeing and self-esteem is our priority and our Mental Health Champion has undergone a wealth of training to offer this support. Our talented, caring tutors also offer aspirational qualification-based training alongside the National Curriculum, weaving in a range of enrichment opportunities, such as outdoor activities, creative and therapeutic sessions, guitar tuition and home cooking skills. Importantly, students are not tied to the classroom to conduct their learning.

Our establishment wholeheartedly believes in every student’s right to an education but that there is not one system that works for every young person.

We feel extremely privileged to be developing an exciting future for the students that we work with. Challenging conventional wisdom, the school takes pride in commitment to the individual student - every student is valued and encouraged to develop their own character and talents to the full.

Confidence and maturity are nurtured by experienced academic and pastoral staff, along with an atmosphere of opportunity; enquiry; equality and diversity; and excellent structures of care for our students. Our primary duty is safeguarding all students at West Midlands Education and Skills.

Helping every student fulfil their potential is the hallmark of our school – progress and success are fundamental to what we strive to do. The wide range of experiences and enrichment that we offer make for cheerful and self-disciplined students who have an appetite for discovery and ambition for Further Education and employment. Every student will receive the benefits of a personal education and skills tutor who will monitor progress at frequent intervals, encourage good learning and challenge and affirm as appropriate.

The effectiveness of our approach is evident in the achievements of our students, both academically and socially. Many of the students who are referred to the One-to-One programme have had long periods of non-attendance at several different schools, yet the current attendance figure for the One-to-One programme is higher, and with the focused individual support most quickly progress through qualifications which would otherwise have been inaccessible to them.
