About us

West Midlands Education & Skills is an educational organisation with a difference.

At West Midlands Education and Skills, we support our students to be the best they can be through offering aspirational qualification-based learning that works towards the national curriculum. Our students all have EHC Plans and are referred to us from a wide range of Local Authorities (LA); students have negative experiences of mainstream school and these act as
a barrier to learning as well as the fuel to some behaviours. They come to West Midlands Education and Skills with low academic achievement and working at pre entry to entry levels; therefore the way we develop our students academically is by using functional skills to build up their confidence and to give them the aspirations to want to exceed. We believe in offering our students practical experiences to prepare them for society and adulthood, by teaching our students functionally; students are able to apply what they have learned to everyday situations and are engaged through our tutors working with them individually, embracing
their interests and moving forward together to reach their personal goals.
Our students are taught out in the community and some students will be taught in the school or at home. Whether they are taught in the home, community or in school, we believe that students learn best through guided discovery learning and aim to facilitate a wide range of experiences linked to their learning. This approach to learning supports students to build upon what they know, test prior knowledge and to make connections with new concepts.

Our Ethos

Our ethos also incorporates these values, we believe in moving forward
together with our students, therefore, embracing their interests, prior
knowledge, personalities and building strong connections based on
reciprocal respect, trust, encouragement and guidance in order to inspire
our students to reach their potential.

W- Whole Student Impact - is the demand for students’ application of key
skills, an interwoven web of knowledge, facts and understanding. The
embedding of key employability skills supports students' transition to
Further Education (FE), apprenticeships and employment.

M - Making Lasting Imprints - The positive impact of the carefully
sequenced learning has had on students’ academically, pastorally, socially
and prepared them for life in Modern Britain.

E - Enrichment Focused - is about using localised visits to contextualise the
students learning, enabling them to make valuable connections that will
support their lifelong learning and aid in the sequencing of the curriculum.

A - Aspirational Learning - is linked to the wider curriculum, embedding
core subjects such as maths, English and ICT within all topics. This student
led component focuses on students’ aspirations and the steps they need to
take to get there.

S - Strong Connections - that contribute to the fluency required over
learning through using repetition, recall and representation. This is about
embedding basic skills and key facts in pupils’ long-term working memory
(e.g., times tables, focused reading, and spellings). It also relates to the
relationships that we create with our students that fosters a respectful,
trusting learning environment

Our Values

At West Midlands Education and Skills, we explicitly teach our students the importance of our values. INTEGRITY forms the basis of our values.

These values are threaded through our lessons and throughout our PSHEand Careers sessions. Students are taught our values regularly and howthey will positively impact their journey to and within adulthood and thelife choices that they make.
